Barlow received his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 1969 and has published over 400 articles and chapters and over 20 books. His major interests over the past 30 years has been the study of anxiety and its disorders, and developing new psychological procedures for practice settings. Prior to his current position as Professor and Director of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders and Director of Clinical Psychology Programs at Boston University, he founded clinical psychology internships at Brown University and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is the recipient of the 2000 American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology. Other awards include the Career Contribution Awards from the Massachusetts and California Psychological Associations, and a MERIT award from the National Institute of Mental Health for long-term contributions to the clinical research effort. During the 1997/1998 academic year, he was Fritz Redlich Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences in Palo Alto, California. He is Past-President of the Society of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association, and the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy. He was also Chair of the American Psychological Association Task Force of Psychological Intervention Guidelines, a member of the DSM-IV Task Force of the American Psychiatric Association, and was Co-Chair of the Work Group for revising the anxiety disorders categories. Dr. Sauer-Zavala is an author, speaker, and scientific consultant. As a researcher at the University of Kentucky, she runs clinical trials testing cutting-edge interventions that harness the power of personality change to alleviate common mental health conditions. Dr. Sauer-Zavala is the lead developer of a short-term intervention personality difficulties to address common mental health problems – COMPASS (a loose acronym for cognitive behavioral modules for personality symptoms). Dr. Sauer-Zavala is also the Founder and Director of Compass Mental Health Training & Consulting, through which she has been invited all over the country and the world (Ireland, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, South Africa, Hong Kong, Japan, Russia, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Canada) to train therapists in her potent, parsimonious interventions. Dr. Sauer-Zavala received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from UK in 2011; she completed her predoctoral residency at Duke University Medical Center and her postdoctoral fellowship at Boston University. Dr. Sauer-Zavala is well-regarded in her field. She has co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and an academic book on personality. Her research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Canadian Institute of Health Research, and the Templeton Foundation. Her work is internationally respected – in 2023 alone, Dr. Sauer-Zavala was invited to give keynote talks at mental health conferences in Sydney, Australia and Cambridge, UK. Todd J. Farchione, PhD, is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, Boston University. Dr. Farchione's research focuses on the nature, assessment, and treatment of anxiety, mood, and related disorders. He has published over 60 articles and chapters in this area. Shannon Sauer-Zavala, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in Boston University's Department of Psychology, as well as the Director of the Unified Protocol Training Institute. Her research is focused on identifying factors that maintain symptoms across broad classes of psychological disorders and using this information to streamline treatment for commonly co-occurring diagnoses.
