Thông tin sách: The Basal Ganglia: Novel Perspectives on Motor and Cognitive Functions (Innovations in Cognitive Neuroscience) (Paperback, 606 trang) – Springer, 2017. Ngôn ngữ: Tiếng Anh.

This groundbreaking text takes current knowledge of the basal ganglia far from well-known motor-based models to a more inclusive understanding of deep-brain structure and function. Synthesizing diverse perspectives from across the brain-behavioral sciences, it tours the neuroanatomy and circuitry of the basal ganglia, linking their organization to their controlling functions in core cognitive, behavioral, and motor areas, both normative and disordered. Interactions between the basal ganglia and major structures of the brain are identified in their contributions to a diverse range of processes, from language processing to decision-making, emotion to visual perception, motivation to intent. And the basal ganglia are intimately involved in the mechanisms of dysfunction, as evinced by chapters on dyskinesia, Parkinson’s disease, neuropsychiatric conditions, and addictions.

Included in the coverage:

  •          Limbic-basal ganglia circuits:parallel and integrative aspects.
  •          Dopamine and its actions in the basal ganglia system.
  •          Cerebellar-basal ganglia interactions.
  •          The basal ganglia contribution to controlled and automatic processing.
  •          The basal ganglia and decision making in neuropsychiatric disorders.
  •         The circuitry underlying the reinstatement of cocaine seeking:                        modulation by deep brain stimulation.
  •          The basal ganglia and hierarchical control in voluntary behavior.

Its breadth and depth of scholarship and data should make The Basal Ganglia a work of great interest to cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, neurologists, neuropsychiatrists, and speech-language pathologists.

Editorial Reviews From the Back Cover

This text presents the contemporary understanding of the basal ganglia. In a groundbreaking synthesis, diverse research perspectives grounded in neuroscience and neurobiology are bought together to reflect an integrated understanding of these deep brain structures. The volume clarifies and broadens perspectives of the basal ganglia that have over the past few decades extended its functional-anatomic roles far beyond motor-centered models. Contributions to the volume from leading basal ganglia researchers altogether relate the neural architecture and functional circuitry of the basal ganglia, its interactions with other major systems of the brain, its neurotransmitter and signaling mechanisms, its role in multiple cognitive and behavioral domains and in various neurocognitive, neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. Many of the novel research techniques that have helped reveal the complex neural architecture and functional diversity of the basal ganglia are also given view.

Topics included in the coverage:

  • Limbic, motor and thalamic basal ganglia circuits; parallel, direct and indirect systems
  • Dopamine and its actions in the basal ganglia system
  • Signaling mechanisms and l-Dopa-induced dyskinesia
  • Controlled and automatic processing
  • Cerebellar-basal ganglia, cortical striatal, and cognitive motor interactions
  • Role of the basal ganglia in associative learning, language and perception
  • Motivation, reinforcement and decision making in neuropsychiatric disorders
  • Computational models including hierarchical control in voluntary behavior

The diversity of themes and depth of scholarship make for a volume relevant to researchers and clinical practitioners – in neuroscience, neurology, neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, and speech-language pathology.

About the Author Jean-Jacques Soghomonian received a doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Aix-Marseille and a Ph.D. in neurological sciences from the University of Montreal. He completed postdoctoral training at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania and joined the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Boston University School of Medicine in 1998. Dr. Soghomonian maintains an active research program on the anatomical and functional organization of the basal ganglia in the normal brain and in experimental models of Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Soghomonian teaches medical histology and medical neuroscience to undergraduate and graduate medical students, and is director of the graduate course Methods in Neuroscience. He currently serves on the MD-PhD admission committee at Boston University School of Medicine and on the qualifying committee in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology.
