The book generally follows the Design Thinking methodology. However, the Design Thinking methodology was partially modified from time to time due to the specificity of the book’s topic. The Design Thinking method consists of Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test modes. This book dedicates each chapter for each mode. Due to feasibility and other limitations, the testing of the prototype — School Area Traffic Safety Assessment toolkit — was conducted by the author instead of the users (readers and institutions). The book has the following structure. In chapter EMPATHIZE, the book explores pedestrians and drivers’ point of view regarding school area traffic safety. In chapter DEFINE, the book identifies the traffic safety problems and establish its problem statement. In chapter IDEATE, best practice examples from European and Asian countries with high traffic safety level and the utilization of these practices are discussed. In chapter PROTOTYPE, guidelines and school area traffic safety assessment toolkit are provided as prototypes based on practices and ideas developed in previous chapters. In chapter TEST, the prototypes including guidelines and school area traffic safety assessment toolkit are tested.
