First appearing as a series of letters to a local newspaper, “The Life Story of Me, Segilola” caused a sensation in Lagos in the late 1920s. The lifelike autobiography of a repentant courtesan, it regaled the reader with risqué escapades, pious moralising and vivid evocations of urban popular culture. The narrative and the commentary that sprang up around it in the Yoruba press offer a unique view of life in colonial Lagos. Today it is recognised as I.B.Thomas's work and hailed as the first Yoruba novel in a major African literary tradition. This volume presents the edited Yoruba text with translation, selected newspaper correspondence, and an introductory essay showing how the text emerged from the Yoruba print culture of the time.Print Culture and the First Yoruba Novel has won the Paul Hair Prize 2013! ....La presse yoruba existe depuis le milieu du XXe siècle. La vie de Lagos se passe en yoruba et en anglais, et ce texte est nourri de la vitalité de cette langue nouvelle : la version anglaise – présentée ici aussi – est d’une grande pauvreté : toute la fluidité, toutes les réfé-rences, toute la capacité syncrétique du texte yoruba semblent soudain perdus. En fait ce texte, et là est l’autre apport du travail de Karin Barber, fonctionne à partir de tous les autres textes publiés dans le journal : reportages, chroniques mondaines, publicités, polémiques diverses, lettres aux éditeurs. Cette textualité proliférante, en anglais et en yoruba, se cristallise, « précipite » écrit Karin Barber (p. 65) dans ce texte et en explique aussi le succès. Les analyses de Bakhtine sur les genres du discours, sur le dialogisme entre les langues et, dans les langues, entre les genres du discours trouvent ici des illustrations particulièrement convaincantes. Les discours deviennent des textes, ces textes s’organisent en genres, et certains deviennent des oeuvres, voire de la littérature. C’est une génération du roman à partir du matériau verbal et social que ce bel essai nous montre'.
